The Last Temptation of Christ (ending). One of the most controversial Jesus films. Yes, the film is fiction and the role of Judas as the one who betrayed Jesus out of love, assisting him in his work of saving humnanity, is not biblical. However the ending exposes all the disobedience of Jesus as seen in the film before as a satanic deception. It shows what an absolute nightmare it would have been for all of us if Jesus had not followed through with his sacrifice! This context and contrast functions as a masterful storytelling foil against which Jesus' death for us shines even more brightly. Thank God even the film finally shows all the scenes of a dark, disobeying "Jesus" in retrospect as a last satanic vision and dream in order to prevent the real Jesus from fulfilling his mission. Unfortunately so many protesting Christians in 1988 never saw nor understood the film as masterfully portraying an obedient, ultimately biblically faithful and historically correct Jesus having died for us and having saved us in reality. For the joy set before him, Jesus gladly endured the cruel cross (Hebrews 12:2).
